Frankie’s Friends Hope Fund helped Charlie, a working K9 dog, receive emergency surgery at BluePearl in Reno, Nevada, for fractured teeth - a procedure that would allow Charlie to continue working and not be forced into early retirement. This is an update about Charlie.

Richard, a K9 officer with Nevada’s Nye County Sheriff’s called BluePearl Reno in August. His K9 partner, Charlie, had just broken a tooth while training in Utah and the local dentists weren’t able to see him for a few months. Knowing how important Charlie’s teeth are to his job as a bite work police K9, Dr. Renner requested Richard bring Charlie down immediately for root canal treatment and metal crown placement.

After driving 9 hours, Richard brought Charlie in the next morning. Charlie was placed under general anesthesia. At that time, it was determined, he had fractured both his upper canines and had significant wear on a bottom canine, predisposing the tooth to further fracture. When these new findings were discussed, the Nye County Sherriff’s Office contemplated the possibility of Charlie’s early retirement due to the extensive cost to fix and maintain his teeth.

Richard would have been crushed to lose his K9 partner. Dr. Renner, not wanting Charlie to retire early due to fractured teeth, reached out to our BluePearl Leadership Team. Our Senior Practice Manager, Stephanie reached out right away to work with Todd’s Funds and Frankie’s Friends to coordinate funds. Our BluePearl team was able to obtain rapid approval for finances and provide the recommended care for Charlie. This included root canal treatments of the upper canines and metal crowns on three of Charlie’s canines. With these treatments, Charlie has returned to his role as a multi-purpose K9 and a vital partner to Richard.
